This framing session consists of a series of interventions designed to bring critical and foundational thinking to set the stage for the week’s work. The session started by reinforcing the basics associated with sustainable management of the drylands and focused attention on the different functional land uses (forestry, agroforestry, pastoral systems) and the ecosystem processes and cycles that underpin them. The socio-economic and political dimensions associated with livelihood strategies were treated through the different interventions as appropriate. Panelists messages emphasized on current state of knowledge (and perhaps what we still need to know) and highlight innovations and solutions (institutional mechanisms, technologies, tools, programs, policies) that will be included in achieving sustainable lives and landscapes in the drylands.
